About this course
How systems talk to each other without becoming one tangled system. Learners compare integration styles and the coupling each creates, design REST, gRPC and GraphQL contracts that evolve without breaking consumers, build event-driven integrations with sagas, the transactional outbox and explicit delivery guarantees, and choose and govern the gateways, webhooks and B2B channels that carry an organisation's integrations.
For: software engineer, architect, data professional.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion you will be able to:
- 1Explain the main integration styles - file transfer, shared database, synchronous APIs, asynchronous messaging and event streaming - and the kinds of coupling each introduces.
- 2Apply REST, gRPC and GraphQL design guidelines to produce consistent, evolvable API contracts with sound pagination, error handling and idempotency.
- 3Analyse compatibility risks in APIs and event schemas and design versioning, deprecation and contract-testing strategies to control them.
- 4Design event-driven integrations using sagas, the transactional outbox and dead-letter handling, with explicitly stated delivery and ordering guarantees.
- 5Select and govern integration platforms - API gateways, API management, webhooks and B2B channels - for an organisation, taking responsibility for their security and lifecycle.

Assessment
Quiz (20%)
Four weekly quizzes drawn from the lesson quiz banks; all count.
Lab (30%)
API design lab - an OpenAPI contract for a provided domain, a versioning and deprecation plan, and consumer-driven contract tests.
Design review (35%)
Event-driven integration design for an order-to-cash case, with saga and outbox design, delivery guarantees, gateway placement and ADRs.
Viva (15%)
Fifteen-minute defence of the integration design, including a breaking-change scenario posed by the panel.
Pass mark 60%. Grades: Distinction, Merit, Pass.
